Problem: How does the Vessel Storage Cost function work?

Cause:

Solution:

The Vessel Storage Rate can be used to allocate the Vessel Costs (e.g. Depreciation) to the Bulk Wine. This function does not calculate the storage fees to be charged to Contract Clients. Vessels containing the Wine of Contract Clients should not have a Rate against them as one will normally not update the cost of Contract Wine with overhead costs.

The "Rate" field in the CELLAR REFERENCE MAINTENANCE, VESSEL TYPES option is used to enter the daily rate for the Vessel (it is not a rate per litre). Once the rate is entered, the CELLAR OPERATIONS, CELLAR WORK SHEET ENTRY and BULK RECEIVAL/DESPATCH OPERATIONS, BULK DESPATCH ENTRY will add storage cost to the Bulk Wine as in the following example:

We have three Vessels with contents on 30 October:

Vessel A: 50 000L

Vessel B: Empty

Vessel C: 10 000L

Follow the following procedures to initiate the functionality:

  • Run the WINEMAKING ADMINISTRATION, VESSEL STORAGE COST UPDATE option while signed in on 30 October. This will calculate storage cost on all Vessels at a zero rate up to 30 October. If we skip this step and enter a rate against the Vessel Type, the update program will calculate storage costs from the first time the Wine Batch was transferred to the Vessel.
  • Enter the "Rate" against all Vessel Types that should add storage cost to the Wine:
    • Vessel A: $25
    • Vessel B: $30
    • Vessel C: $10

We transfer 10 000L from Vessel A to Vessel B on 15 November. This transfer calculates the storage cost and adds it to the cost of the total volume before removing the transfer volume using the following formula:

15 days (include 31/10, but exclude 15/11) x $25

The Wine is removed with a cost that includes the storage.

We sell 5 000L of the Wine in Vessel B on 20 November. The BULK DESPATCH ENTRY will calculate storage cost and add it to the cost of the total volume in Vessel B using the following formula:

5 days (include 15/11, but exclude 20/11) x $30

The WINEMAKING ADMINISTRATION, VESSEL STORAGE COST UPDATE option should be used at the end of every month after adjustments are done to the Bulk Wine with Stocktake. This program will add storage cost to the Wine for the period since the last update occurred (whether it was this function, Cellar Work Sheet Entry or Bulk Despatch Entry) to the current date on which you are logged in. We run this function on 30 November with the following results:

Vessel A: 15days x $25 = $375 was added to the 40 000L

Vessel B: 10 days x $30 = $300 was added to the 5 000L

Vessel C: 30 days x $10 = $300 was added to the 10 000L

You will notice that storage cost is added the moment a change in the Vessel volume occurs. The VESSEL STORAGE COST UPDATE only impacts on the period since the last movement (Cellar Work Sheet Entry or Bulk Desptach Entry) or the last date the VESSEL STORAGE COST UPDATE was run, whichever has the latter date.
